Глобальный уровень грамотности для всех людей в возрасте 15 лет и старше составляет 86,3%. Глобальный уровень грамотности для всех мужчин составляет 90,0%, а для всех женщин - 82,7%. Показатель варьируется во всем мире: развитые страны имеют показатель 99,2% (2013 г.); Океания с 71,3%; Южная и Западная Азия с 70,2% (2015 г.) и Африка к югу от Сахары с 64,0% (2015 г.). Более 75% из 781 миллиона неграмотных взрослых в мире проживают в Южной Азии, Западной Азии и Африке к югу от Сахары, а женщины составляют почти две трети всех неграмотное взрослое население во всем мире.
