CVG Infobox reform[edit]

There has recently been many changes concerning this infobox to bring it in line with new CVG standards, so I thought i'd address some of them.

Nothing is wrong with having articles included about specific things, the new conventions beign discussed favour unbrella articles over specific ones, but we don't HAVE lists and umbrella articles, so this suffices. Plus, the proposals are just that, proposals. Not Wikipolicy yet. Firestorm 21:12, 30 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't see why any of that is a reason to have links to redirects, three lines of metadata, and an entire line devoted to a link that can go in the header. "It's not policy" doesn't mean the reasons behind the standards suddenly evaporate. - A Man In Bl♟ck (conspire | past ops) 13:28, 31 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What was the reasoning behind reverting the edit I made? Other sections with infoboxes will include links to the pages devoted to major characters, notably The Lord of the Rings, a former featured article. The DMC infobox wasn't bloated by adding those links, and it saves the user a click if they start at a game page and then want to see the Dante article for instance. And yes, the Dante article is linked near the top of just about all the DMC pages, but I don't see it as being more redundant than having links to the three other games and the characters page. --Boradis 23:29, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The fact that there are ugly, overcrowded navboxes for other series doesn't mean it's a good idea to cram everything into this template. The characters are already linked in the articles for which they're relevant, don't need to be linked in the articles where they aren't relevant, and the list of characters is still linked. - A Man In Bl♟ck (conspire | past ops) 05:53, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Except that Dante and Sparda, and to a lesser extent Vergil, are relevant to all the games so far (with the exception of Vergil not being a factor in DMC2). But I'll drop it since I'll happily cooperate with anyone who also seeks to keep the DMC pages useful and free of bloat. --Boradis 02:26, 23 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

New Navbox proposal[edit]

Based on the fact that the Devil May Cry series is expanding beyond the realm of video games, I thought it might be time to reflect that. Below is my proposal for a new navbox to replace the current one.

The Other Media section is not well-represented in the current Devil May Cry series of articles, and I feel that it's preferable to have the navbox reflect all of the articles and be functional than just look pretty. It's not an especially large navbox either, so that should take care of most complaints regarding it. Cheers, Lankybuggerspeaksee○ 18:26, 22 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

That is needlessly massive, and half of it isn't necessary. Why do we need to link each game's OST in EVERY SINGLE article, when they're already linked in the articles for the games to which they correspond? Likewise for the manga. - A Man In Bl♟ck (conspire | past ops) 18:28, 22 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Part of it is ease of navigation, though I think the main thing is that I did not in fact know that the Devil May Cry soundtracks had articles here on Wikipedia until I stumbled across the articles via google while looking for information about the DMC2 soundtrack. None of the articles currently list them prominently, except for the DMC2 page. If this template is supposed to be for the series, then it should feature all aspects of the series instead of just the games. I'm not saying the characters should be individually listed (the Street Fighter templates gives me nightmares) but the navigation boxes are designed to aid in navigation, and having links to the OST information and the manga would aid in finding more information about the serieis.
As for the space concerns, I don't really see what you're talking about. Presuming the reader's screen isn't causing the text to wrap, this new proposed template adds a single line to the length of the template. The wikilinks for the Manga and Soundtracks could easily be reduced so that even on low-res computer monitors the text doesn't wrap. Cheers, Lankybuggerspeaksee○ 18:44, 22 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Correction, the Devil May Cry article and the Devil May Cry 3 article don't list the soundtracks at all. Cheers, Lankybuggerspeaksee○ 18:47, 22 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hm. They probably should. The logical solution to that problem is to mention them in those articles. How is the DMC2 OST particularly relevant to DMC3, so much that it's linked as prominently (moreso!) as DMC2 itself? Comprehensiveness isn't an issue; we already have a category for a comprehensive list.
As for the size, the bottom of the page in article is cluttered enough; increasing the size of this template only increases that problem. - A Man In Bl♟ck (conspire | past ops) 18:52, 22 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
As for the other articles linking to the soundtracks, it's something I'm intending to do once I finish gathering more information about them (Capcom nearly didn't release the DMC and DMC2 soundtracks, interestingly enough). The size is something I don't really see as a huge issue. At just 3 lines high (4 with the title) this proposed template is still far and away smaller than many other templates. It's a question of added utility, to my mind: For one extra line, we can add the ability to directly go to any other article. With the upcoming DMC movie and anime, the need for a more rubust navigational box only grows.
An alternate proposal you may find easier to accept might be to create a secondary navbox for the DMC series media. The games would get the regular template as it appears now, Other media would get the other media template, and the series page would be burdened with either both, or a special navbox designed specifically for that page. Cheers, Lankybuggerspeaksee○ 19:27, 22 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'd be happier with a split box. I think the soundtracks are more related to each other than to the non-corresponding games. I've been trying to champion horizontal arrangement in these navboxes for quite a while now. - A Man In Bl♟ck (conspire | past ops) 19:58, 22 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'm still not entirely sold on the split navboxes, but I've tweaked the currently proposed navbox so that the Other Media won't cause additional scroll unless the user is viewing it on an extremely small monitor. Cheers, Lankybuggerspeaksee○ 20:10, 22 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Scrunching it doesn't really resolve my biggest qualm: links to the OSTs just aren't that useful. - A Man In Bl♟ck (conspire | past ops) 02:32, 23 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm totally fine with the added content and tweaked layout. --Boradis 19:50, 22 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think this Navbox is quite good, but it could also be better, and here are some possible solutions for some of the problems.

About the size, well, it could be surely smaller, specially if we don't put the whole tittles of the games but rather something like: "Devil May Cry  • 2 • 3 • 4

And about the OSTs link, well, I think that the best solution would be to make only ONE article about all DMC's OST, dividing it into sections for the games. That could solve us the problem as, being for all the games, the link would be relevant. Don't ya think? ^^U

Oh, well, hope that this helped a bit. (Alexlayer 02:37, 23 March 2007 (UTC))[reply]

Actually, I think that this might be the best solution. They're not terribly noteworthy as albums, and I don't think there'll be an excess of sourced material. - A Man In Bl♟ck (conspire | past ops) 06:55, 23 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Something more. I believe it is good for this Navbox to have an Other Media section, since it can help us not only with the OSTs and the Manga, but with any other kind of media related to DMC that's not a videogame, like, for example, the "Raising the Devil" DVD and the others. (Alexlayer 02:43, 23 March 2007 (UTC))[reply]

Support although Alexlayer's comments are not unfounded. If you add the content mentioned, then it will be full support Quatreryukami 03:07, 23 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Conditional Support if you have the title in the template be Devil May Cry media, rather than Devil May Cry video games. Peace, -- The Hybrid 04:22, 23 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the input, everyone. AMIB has raised some more concerns at the DMC2 FAC, so after I take care of those I'll unify the DMC Soundtracks into one article (probably with prose, leaving the current soundtrack articles as tracklists per WP:ALBUM) and then source the crap out of the bugger. I wouldn't mind seeing the entire DMC series of articles made into FAs, really. Cheers, Lankybuggerspeaksee ○ 22:50, 23 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Support It looks formated maybe some minor tweaks. -DDF 15:46, 24 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

New Navbox v 2.0[edit]

This one is much more compact. The Soundtracks article is something I'm about to dive into right now. Cheers, Lankybuggerspeaksee ○ 18:47, 26 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Note: This has been significantly updated. I like this one a lot more because it keeps in line with the style of other Navboxes. Cheers, Lankybuggerspeaksee ○ 04:46, 27 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Looks good. - A Man In Bl♟ck (conspire | past ops) 05:57, 27 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Organization of games[edit]

I would separate DmC from the previous games if it had sequels but currently it has nothing so the reboot section seems kind of empty. What are your thoughts?Tintor2 (talk) 23:08, 17 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Logo needs to be replaced because it's a fan creation, not an official one from Capcom[edit]

Per the uploader's description of the file used as the logo, it's a fan creation, not an official one from Capcom. Recommending that it should be replaced with namely this version. -23.241.11.196 (talk) 04:36, 29 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Amending that it's apparently mimicking DMC3's logo just without the "3." -23.241.11.196 (talk) 08:35, 29 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
