Varattu Pallam Dam is an artificial dam constructed in hills 12 km (7.5 mi) from Anthiyur in the Erode District. This dam irrigates nearby areas. A mountain road from Anthiyur leads to Kollegal. Storage capacity of this reservoir is 1.39 TMC. This is the one of place who Hits 1200 MM rain in erode district. with canals and tanks that have ayacut areas totalling about 5,500 acres water holding capacity[1]

Wildlife in Varattu Pallam Dam Area[edit]

Varattu pallam dam is located next to the forest area. Hence the movement of wild animals like deer, bison, monkeys and birds is high. In the afternoon and evening, herds of elephants come to the dam to drink water. Extra attention is needed at such times.[2] A large number of wild animals like elephant, deer, leopard, wildebeest, porcupine, leopard live in Varattu pallam dam forest area near Andhiur in Erode district. Elephants and deers come to Varattu pallam dam in 3 times morning, noon and evening to drink water. It will be a sight to behold.[2]

Tourism[edit]

Varattu Pallam Dam has become a popular tourist destination due to its stunning natural beauty and the recreational opportunities it offers, When the Tamil Nadu Budget was presented in the Assembly It was announced that a new wildlife sanctuary known as 'Thanthai Periyar Animal Sanctuary' will be formed in 2023-2024 near Varattu Pallam Dam, making it the 18th Animal Sanctuary in Tamil Nadu.[3]
