Influence on other genres[edit]

ought someone to mention that their music inspired the then-drummer of Napalm Death, Mick Harris, to name grindcore grindcore, after saying that it was like the gridnig noise of Swans, but faster? 80.0.121.5 (talk) 20:19, 26 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sections[edit]

I've had a go at a different split of the article into three main sections. I've removed the Burning World section, since it didn't seem to make sense to have a whole section devoted to just one album, especially when it's not one of their best. Notes[edit]

How might one add a note regarding the style of songwriting itself and its transformation from The Great Annihilator to Soundtracks for the Blind? I notice that the songs on the latter are more depressive and reserved, not unlike "Killing for Company" in the former but less percussive. Case in point "Empathy", "Animus", etc. How does one describe that in an article without ruining the flow?

Discog help[edit]

The band themselves doesn't seem to care as religiously about avoiding the "the" as fans do, though. For example, Gira talks about the Swans' new album at the beginning of this 1987 performance. --Delirium (talk) 10:00, 17 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

i've added grunge and drone metal to the genres list[edit]

drone metal is fairly uncontroversial, but the grunge is likely to construct a kneejerk reaction. if you define grunge as the sound developed by early nirvana, early soundgarden and the melvins, it is quite obvious that swans had an incredible influence on the sound. cobain has cited 'raping a slave' as a primary influence. regardless of how this is eventually interpreted, the connection between no wave and grunge is very strong and should be acknowledged. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.53.24.135 (talk) 15:55, 2 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

And honestly, even if you got a source claiming either of those, it'd be much probably challenged. While definitely a highly influential band in the development of the sound of the harsher strains of drone metal, their sound is not that of the genre. And as per grunge, the "genre" (several critics have claimed that it was more of a marketing term than a true subgenre) is so sprawling that only a handful of bands were influenced by noise rock, let alone early Swans' very particular style. MoS/policy violations in revert[edit]

Hello Bowling is life, I noticed that you made a change to this article, Swans (band), but in doing this change/undo, you seem to have violated several Wikipedia policies.

Wikipedia's MoS on Infoboxes states "Avoid links to sections within the article; the table of contents provides that function." Your edit restored this non-MoS linking.
It also goes against the recommendations in the { {Infobox musical artist} } template documentation.
Lastly, when doing any edits, Wikipedia policy states that "It is considered good practice to provide a summary for every edit, especially when reverting (undoing) the actions of other editors or deleting existing text; otherwise, people may question your motives for the edit."
