Search[edit]

When type "suzhou" in the search engine on the right corner of this page, the engine could not find suzhou article. I am wondering what's wrong.Tim 15:06, 29 Aug 2003 (UTC)

This doesn't seem to be a problem anymore. --Merovingian (t) (c) July 7, 2005 07:23 (UTC)

Article[edit]

Reference to "2500 years ago in the late Shang Dynasty" is internally inconsistent. Either there is a typo, or else the appropriate dynasty is the Eastern Zhou. The article says that "Helu of Wu" established the city. The Wu article is a broad disambiguation page. Can anybody offer any clarification? --Merovingian (t) (c) July 7, 2005 07:23 (UTC)

Pronounciation[edit]

Sue Jo? Sue Chow? Sue Zo? Anon 17 March 2008 11:18 UTC —Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.224.81.234 (talk) 11:18, 17 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"Soo-joh" is a good enough approximation for a non-Chinese speaker. 208.120.96.170 (talk) 03:53, 26 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The short answer is "Sue Joe". The longer answers is that there are good reasons neither Wade–Giles nor pinyin writes it that way and interested readers can look at their pages and HELP:IPA FOR MANDARIN. Sadly, it's probably a bad idea to include a "usual English pronunciation" using HELP:RESPELL in the lead: someone would immediately insist on the "proper" Chinese IPA, which is completely unhelpful. Pinyin is already phonetic enough that {{IPA-cmn}} can transcribe directly from pinyin to the IPA letters and Pinyin is much easier to write and better known than the IPA transcriptions of Chinese sounds. Since all of that is at the infobox already and at Suzhou's Wiktionary entry, it would just be an eyesore and an unhelpful one. — LlywelynII 07:15, 20 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Admin attention[edit]

This page was moved without any consensus or discussion. Please move it back to "Suzhou", where it belongs. Colipon+(Talk) 20:05, 6 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

copying msg from my talk page
I can do that, but is it necessary? It looks like it has been at the current title for at least a couple weeks, and there's a hatnote explaining the redirect. While this is obviously the biggest and most 'primary' Suzhou, there are still lots of others, so I can see some value in having the current title even if it is the primary topic. Having the big "Jiangsu" in the page title will help be an extra safeguard against readers looking for some other Suzhou and reading this article instead; the hatnote should be enough to guide them, but sometimes readers are stupid or inattentive, so this title would be an extra notification. rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 20:19, 6 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it's necessary. See WP:PRIMARYTOPIC. — LlywelynII 18:52, 19 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Incorrect maps[edit]

The location of Suzhou is shown on the map on the main page. But it is missing from the maps when they are viewed by clicking through from the main page. MarcMFresko (talk) 11:02, 30 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

replica collection - Bridge[edit]

No information about the replica collection of famous landscapes from around the world in Suzhou?

This collection includes even the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Alexandre III Bridge and, of course, the Tower Bridge from London.

Lead section[edit]

Just as a reminder, since the Chinese is dealt with in two infoboxes and an etymology section now, the hanzi should not be included in the lead sentence as well. It's completely needless and frowned upon per WP:MOS-ZH. — LlywelynII 18:55, 19 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Per WP:ERA and WP:ENGVAR, this edit established this pages usages as BC/AD and American English, respectively. Kindly maintain both consistently, pending a new consensus. Remember best practices involve using non-breaking spaces—& n b s p ;—between the era and the date and placing AD before numerical dates and (typically) omitting it entirely when discussing centuries. When using the {{convert}} template, remember that its creator defaulted it to British English and it's necessary to add a |sp=us or |abbr=on tag at the end. — LlywelynII 07:15, 20 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Suzhou article at Wikivoyage[edit]

WV has a decent article voy:Suzhou and are considering making it their destination of the month sometime soon voy:Wikivoyage:Destination_of_the_month_candidates#Suzhou. Of course it needs contributions.

Is there anyone here who would be inclined to join in? Pashley (talk) 15:49, 5 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Quality images of Suzhou?[edit]

I don't believe there are any Quality, Valued, or Featured images of Suzhou. Is anyone aware of any good images worth nominating, either here at English Wikipedia or at Commons? ---Another Believer (Talk) 04:59, 16 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Future article expansion[edit]

There are more historical and economic historical details

from the official website of the 2001 APEC summit, part of which occurred in Suzhou. — LlywelynII 05:59, 6 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Flag not correct[edit]

Try Adobe Illustration or a graphic designer. The flag letters don't follow a fine curve. Pay a Japanese graphic designer. It's not bad. Don't be an egoist. Do the best you can, even if that includes others. Others aren't the enemy if they help us. Do your best, even by involving other human beings. We should achieve the superior result. The superior result is the goal, not egoism!

the edifice isn't centered, you can measure its corners - even the lines beneath it are blurry

we can do better! Redesign from the beginning!!! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A02:2149:844B:4500:DDE0:42F3:43A1:C82 (talk) 14:10, 18 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

pinyin: Sùzhōu?[edit]

Should that not be included in the lead section of the article? Peter K Burian (talk) 17:16, 26 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Southern Jiangsu or southeastern Jiangsu?[edit]

Is Suzhou more properly referred to as being in southern Jiangsu or southeastern Jiangsu? 173.88.246.138 (talk) 22:48, 3 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I guess southeastern is technically more geographically precise. But it's a pretty meaningless specification because southeastern Jiangsu is kind of an arbitrary area, whereas southern Jiangsu is more well-defined and meaningful, both culturally/historically (see Jiangnan) and geographically (generally areas south of the Yangtze are considered to be southern Jiangsu, but there's nothing that divides it west-east.) Demographics/Admin Divisions[edit]

Looks like the Administrative Divisions section already has districts/satellites and their populations. The population table in the Demographics section is not only poorly formatted, but also therefore seems unnecessary. F1anders (talk) 06:05, 22 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
