I clarified that the term 'gypsy' that they may be called is considered a slur by the people it was originally used to refer to (the Romani) and offered a link/clarified it shouldn't be used in everyday speech but its there for histoircal context Kizemet (talk) 05:59, 12 August 2020 (UTC)kizemet[reply]

So where did they originally come from, borneo or zamboanga?[edit]

"From Zamboanga, some members this people adopted an exclusively seaborne culture and spread outwards in the 10th century towards Basilan, Sulu, Borneo, and Sulawesi.[26][28] They arrived in Borneo in the 11th century.[23] This hypothesis is currently the most widely accepted among specialists studying the Austronesian peoples. This would also explain why even boat-dwelling Sama-Bajau still practice agricultural rituals, despite being exclusively fishermen.[28] Linguistic evidence further points to Borneo as the ultimate origin of the proto-Sama-Bajau peoples."

so linguistic evidence points to borneo as the ultimate origin of the bajao but they were originally from zamboanga? i dont get it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Patrone johnson (talkcontribs) 02:10, 12 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Their ancestors came from Borneo, but their ethnogenesis is in Zamboanga (i.e. where they actually became the Sama, distinct from the Yakan, etc.). From Zamboanga, they spread further to other islands, including back to Borneo (hence the Sama Kota Belud). Incidentally, I don't know if Malaysians realize it, but "Kota Belud" means the "City of the Sea Waves" in Philippine languages (cf. "Kota Batu" - "City of Stone").-- OBSIDIANSOUL 07:22, 18 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Untitled[edit]

This is quite a complicated article. It seems to be written from a Malaysian perspective. Is it possible to get a clearer definition on Bajau? In Malaysia "Bajau" is used in a more generic sense encompassing the Sama people. In the Philippines "Sama" is used in a more generic sense of which the Philippines Bajau are included (Sama Palaˈu and Sama Dilaut). I know that in the Philippines perspective/context this article's portrayal of a Bajau is quite wrong and would upset some of the other Sama. I do not understand the Malaysian context as much. Could someone please shed some light on the sentiments of the Bajau in Malaysia about this? Would some of the Sama from these islands in the Philippines be quite happy with the title Bajau there or is it only used for political reasons?

Also a note that should be cleared up is that the Samal are not a member of the Bajau. Samal is only a term that other Filipinos recognize the Sama by. The Sama call themselves Sama. It is how in the Philippines the Muslim tribes make a distinction between the Sama and the Bajau. The Sama are called Samal and the Sama Palaˈu as well as Sama Dilaut are called Bajau.
