Fair use rationale for Image:Leadbelly Rock Island Line Original 1935-1943 Recordings.jpg[edit]

Image:Leadbelly Rock Island Line Original 1935-1943 Recordings.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Cocaine[edit]

I've been told that this song also refers (or, at least, has been used to refer) to snorting lines of cocaine - is there any truth to this? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 138.37.250.195 (talk) 23:37, 12 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

sources![edit]

the underground railroad hypothesis is "cool" i guess but where is the sources? will erase soon if it remains unsourced. Ishmaelblues (talk) 15:28, 22 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have removed it, according to wikipedia rules. The "reference needed" tags have been there for severals months. 81.131.49.94 (talk) 18:40, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dead external links to Allmusic website – January 2011[edit]

Since Allmusic have changed the syntax of their URLs, 1 link(s) used in the article do not work anymore and can't be migrated automatically. Please use the search option on http://www.allmusic.com to find the new location of the linked Allmusic article(s) and fix the link(s) accordingly, prefereably by using the {{Allmusic}} template. If a new location cannot be found, the link(s) should be removed. This applies to the following external links:

Song theft by Lonnie Donegan[edit]

I've removed some unsourced content from the article about Lonnie Donegan supposedly making a fortune by claiming ownership of RIL in the UK so that UK recordings of the song are credited to him. This doesn't seem to be accurate. Even his own version was credited as "Traditional" in the UK [1]. Maybe there is some controversy about copyright in the US, but this would need sourcing. US releases by Bobby Darin, Stan Freburg and Don Cornell all credited Donegan. But it's not clear exactly how controversial that is. Donegan may have been making money from the publishing rights to a song that wasn't his. But Lead Belly, John Lomax, Johnny Cash and The Weavers, to name a few, did exactly the same thing with the same song. Formerip (talk) 20:25, 20 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Alan Lomax was clearly unhappy with what Donegan had done, but unfortunately my view of this misses out a crucial couple of pages. Ghmyrtle (talk) 20:35, 20 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It's showing me 294 onwards. To summarize, Alan Lomax finds out about Donegan's versions (he also did a number of other Lead Belly covers) and also about a publishing company (not named) that is publishing songs from his book. He goes to see his lawyers, but they tell him there's nothing much he can do. He writes a series of articles setting out why he feels he should be entitled to publishing royalties.
So, maybe there is something that can be reported in the article. But what was previously in there, as well as not being accurate, depicted Lomax's claim as legitimate and Donegan as a scoundrel. I can't see anything to support either of those things. Formerip (talk) 21:38, 20 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I remember Donegan claiming in the press - more than once - that all he ever made out of RIL was his £25 recording fee. (Sorry no references). Valetude (talk) 14:31, 29 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
