If you want live noise-gating you will need expensive equipment -- but for post-processing, Audacity has built-in noise gating. It works pretty well provided that you can get a sample of the background static that you want to remove. A half-second silence (or crowd noise) is enough.

Audio Noise Reduction section confusing[edit]

The Audio Noise Reduction section is confusing. It refers to 'noise gates' as does the first section, but the device it refers to is different. The device it refers to functions as a 'multi-band noise gate'. A clear distinction needs to be made because a single band noise gate has clear limitations (it cannot remove static, hum, etc when the signal is present), whereas a 'multi-band noise gate' can do a much better job at removing noise even in the presence of signal. Thus, this section appears to contridict the first section. What is a better term for 'multi-band noise gates'? Can this section be put in a better context so that it fits with the first section better? Iain (talk) 07:35, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I don't see the contradiction. One car being able to go faster than another, or having air conditioning while another doesn't, is not a contradiction. Hyacinth (talk) 01:52, 27 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
