Untitled[edit]

I find it bizarre that this article lists October as the date for Mehregan. As far as I know, it occurs on the winter solstice, and should thus take place on December 21. Most other web resources attest to this. For instance, see here: http://www.iranonline.com/festivals/mehregan-english-2/ —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Naseem19 (talkcontribs) 23:52, 21 December 2005 (UTC).[reply]

The provided URL doesn't mention December 21st. It says "16th [day] of the seventh month". Are you perhaps confusing Mehregan with Sadeh?

I find it very unlikely that the scarified sheep's fat is taken to the temple to be burned on the holy fire. Zoroastrians are extremely careful about the fire and nothing has to go in there but wood and incense. Where have you read this? Where is your source? good catch. well done.
btw, you can also edit such things yourself (leave a descriptive comment of your edit so its not misunderstood to be destructive)

Mithra[edit]

Please stop saying Mithra is a Zoroastrian divinity, Mithra is a Mithraist divinity whose name was never stated by Zoroaster in our holy book the Gathas. We only consider God as unique along with His/Her 7 virtues characterized as angels in the Gathas (Amsha Sepandan). To correct this mistake, I remove all the paragraphs stating Mithra as a Zoroastrian divinity and saying Mehregan is a celebration of Mithra. Zoroastrian books about the subject do not generally agree with the thesis Mehregan is a celebration of Mithra. A great reference is the book Falsafeye Zartosht (Zoroaster's Philosophy) by Dr. Farhang Mehr. There it is explained, as I have added inside the wikipedia article:

"As mentioned above, Mehregān is a name-day feast. These name-day feasts are festivals celebrated on the day of the year when the day-name and month-name dedicated to a particular angel or virtue intersect. Indeed, Zoroastrian Iranian before Islam had 30-days months, which means that each day in a month had a different name. 12 of the days are also names of the 12 months. The day whose name corresponded to the name of the month was celebrated. It was a celebration of life, climate changing, God, joy. In Zoroastrianism, happiness is really important and is considered as holy and must be attracted. Thus, this religion has always had many feasts and celebrations."

Before considering them as divinities, we have to know all these names (Mehr, Tir, etc.) are just names of different virtues.

Rewrite[edit]

>Mehrgan was once a Persian festival, and possibly even older, but what forms it then remains in the realm of speculation.

I think this sentence needs to be rewritten by someone who knows the subject. Rissa, Guild of Copy Editors (talk) 00:56, 21 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
