Lowest Test average?[edit]

Does Ramprakash have the lowest Test batting average of specialist batsmen to have played 50 Tests? It's certainly quite a bit lower than that of Graeme Hick, the only other man who comes to mind in this regard. Loganberry (Talk) 14:39, 10 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think he probably has the worst average of any England batsman to play 50+ Tests, but Alistair Campbell of Zimbabwe only averaged 27.2 in 60 tests and it may be that there are others if you trawl through the records long enough. ReadingOldBoy 12:04, 25 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Average of 100[edit]

He ended with 2,278 runs at an average of 103.54, becoming only the sixth man to average over one hundred in an English season.[2]

Half Asian?[edit]

If his father is from Guyana (South America), and his mother English, he can hardly be half asian can he? Grunners 01:57, 24 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think it is because his father is most likely from Asian roots. Reading in my atlas it says that one of the religions in Guyana is Muslim so it is likely that Mark's father is a Muslim. Gill P 06:52, 28 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

ramprakash is a hindu name, guyana is mostly hindu.

Rather trivial nearly-record[edit]

In 2006, Ramprakash failed by only 10 runs to beat WG Grace's record for the most County Championship runs made against another team in a season. Grace made 547 runs (243* & 3; 301) for Gloucs against Sussex in 1896; Ramprakash made 537 runs (51 & 155; 301* & 30) for Surrey against Northants 110 years later. 2007 records[edit]

I corrected this sentence, as it contained a couple of errors. Firstly, 2007 did not see Ramprakash become the first man to score hundreds against all 18 first-class counties, as he had already completed the set in 2003. And secondly, his record was not to score 2,000 runs in successive English seasons, which lots of people have done (look at Jack Hobbs if you want real consistency!), but to average over 100 in successive English seasons. I specify "English" because Don Bradman managed the feat in 1938, 1938-39 and 1939-40, though in the 1938-39 season he only played seven innings; some record lists will not count anything below eight innings as a full season. He was consistently one of the best players at one of the fashionable County sides. The selectors picked him time and again for that reason. (But not, strangely, for his rather weak test performances). Clearly, being great at County level is no guide to being great at Test level. After eight years of being saturated by flat pitches and easy runs it is wise to remember that Ramps played in the 1990s, the most bowler dominated decade since the 1950s. For the matches Ramps played the average runs per wicket was 30.17, the same measure for Ravi Bopara is 41.00 so actually Ramps average of 27 in a bowler friendly era (overall average 30) is statistically better than Bopara's average of 33 in a batsman dominated one (overall average 41).
For the 52 matches Ramps played the other England batsman's averages are as follows: Stewart 40.15, Hussain 35.96, Thorpe 35.86, Atherton 33.52, Butcher 31.34 and Hick 26.63 so it's not like the rest of the batting line-up was averaging 40+ like the current one is. Other batsmen were tried but they struggled in the few Tests they were given and with Ramps/Hick scoring runs in county cricket, the selectors couldn't resist. Much in the same way the present selectors continue to reselect Harmison after he's taken wickets at county cricket, he hasn't performed at Test level in 4 or 5 years, but the selectors have this urge telling them that this time could be different.
I notice you're from Australia so the comparison could be with Hayden or Martyn who both had poor records in the 1990s, after being given a decent run of seven Tests they were dropped and returned to domestic cricket for years, when they returned bowling attacks were getting weaker, pitches flatter and they made hay. England selectors didn't have the luxury of Australian batting resources though, so instead of years to find themselves/their game Ramps/Hick were given a few weeks. --Jpeeling (talk) 22:45, 13 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
