Factual errors[edit]

The source from World Gazetteer doesn't really concur with the figures shown here so I've replaced it with this source and removed the unsourced contents. Thanks. --Zayeem (talk) 10:19, 12 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

According to census 2017 government official figures different for karachi and Hyderabad as specified in this list. Ranjha876 (talk) 22:14, 22 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Use of unreliable estimates[edit]

The "2014 estimates" seem to be made-up. Despite repeated claims that they're "sourced" no reliable source has been presented that confirms these figures. And while I changed them to what the 1998 census reports, I found that for several cities the last few digits of the "estimates" agreed with the census while the first few digits had been changed: Apparently someone just changed the significant digits to what they thought felt right and didn't bother to do something about the remaining digits. Unless and until updated figures have been reported by reliable sources, we should use the 1998 census, not such made-up "estimates". Huon (talk) 20:14, 17 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Huon: Yes, the figures currently presented in this list are not reliable. I have given a cursory review of the page history and am experiencing difficulty locating a diff which cites qualified reliable sources for this data. I am requesting assistance with locating an appropriate revision to rollback to, and failing that we need to rebuild this list based on the most recent census data such that it agrees with Wikipedia:Verifiability policy. This should be done in tandem with the Template:Largest cities of Pakistan template as it has the same issues. Regards, Yamaguchi先生 (talk) 20:40, 17 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I've reverted to a version based on the 1998 census. That's consistent and reliable enough, I'd say. Updating specific cities or "agglomerations" based on individual sources seems useless due to the then-inconsistent methodology. Huon (talk) 21:07, 17 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
"Apparently someone just changed the significant digits to what they thought felt right and didn't bother to do something about the remaining digits". This is pretty common vandalism, at least from my experience. I've wrote a small little guide for pages like this at User:Elockid/Identifying vandalism. Pakistani cities are quite a favorite to vandalize, not the common vandalism that people know like adding obscenities and such, but more of sneaky vandalism/introduction of deliberate factual errors. Semi-protected for 6 months[edit]

This list has been semi-protected for a period of 6 months, due to ongoing abuse by Zalingeishahpur (talk · contribs) and IP addresses from the 119.160.0.0/16 range. Please see Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Zalingeishahpur/Archive for detail. If any changes need to be made, please list them here on this talk page with a valid source to substantiate the change request. Regards, Yamaguchi先生 18:40, 27 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Due to persistent sockpuppetry and disruption by Zalingeishahpur, which has been ongoing for over a year now, this list has been semi-protected for the indefinite future. This list should remain static until the next census, there is no need to unprotect until said data has been released to the public. Please do not hesitate to contact me if there are any questions or concerns. Regards, Yamaguchi先生 (talk) 02:45, 11 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Bahawalpur is wrongly shown as a city of Balochistan province[edit]

The province for Bahawalpur city is shown as Balochistan which is a mistake. Bahawalpur is located in Punjab. Moiz19 (talk) 12:16, 22 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Merger proposal[edit]

The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section. A summary of the conclusions reached follows.
The result of this discussion was that a merger was necessary. Abbasi786786 (talk) 21:43, 8 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Muhammad Umar, Cute177, AwaisGas, Nomi887, Fast track, Pakieditor, MarnetteD, Innocent Paki, Talha, and Catfurball: I propose to merge List of cities in Pakistan into List of cities in Pakistan by population. The article List of cities in Pakistan is mostly based off of 2012 estimates that are unsourced and a few 2017 census results that are entirely incorrect (for example in the gallery, where ranks number 15 - 18 are seemingly fabricated). Throughout much of the article, you can find data cells that are missing either the population or the rank, have mixed up ranks but correct (or incorrect) populations, or don't even apply to cities (the whole entire Azad Kashmir section doesn't show city populations, but shows district populations!) The way I see it, the only thing of value the article provides are pictures, which we can distribute throughout this list and other lists (eleven or twelve pictures have been added to this article, and there are different lists to show the largest cities in Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, and KPK that can have the pictures of smaller cities). Another idea I like is to change the article's name to "Lists of cities in Pakistan" and add different lists that link to national and provincial lists (that seems to be what the article is trying to accomplish, as it provides the ten most populous cities in each subdivision of Pakistan). I have pinged all users that have contributed at least 200 characters of authorship in either article according to this tool, so we can have a discussion about the future of these articles. Please share your opinion below. -- Abbasi786786 (talk) 17:22, 1 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Muhammad Umar, Cute177, AwaisGas, Nomi887, Fast track, Pakieditor, MarnetteD, Innocent Paki, Talha, and Catfurball: Are there no objections, or did I ping you all the wrong way (I think I'm doing it correctly now)? I'm gonna proceed with the merger if I don't receive a response by July 10. -- Abbasi786786 (talk) 16:28, 3 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Your pings (both of them) worked fine Abbasi786786. My only edit to the article was to fix bareurls so I'm not deeply informed about or invested in it. As I read your proposal it does make sense. I would suggest that you wait a few more days for responses. In these times other editors may have things going on in their lives that are limiting their time on WikiP. Also for US editors it is a busy holiday weekend. Thanks for your research about this and best regards. MarnetteD|Talk 17:24, 3 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Ytpks896: I do not understand. How is the other article fine? It's based mostly off of unsourced 2012 estimates (maybe there were references in the past, not anymore), has many cells that are missing data, and a seemingly fabricated ranking on the last section. The list for Azad Jammu & Kashmir carries district populations and not citiy populations, and I believe that alone should be enough to cause worry. I am open to improving that article if you'd like to do that, but it definitely cannot stay as it is. -- Abbasi786786 (talk) 19:39, 20 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Catfurball: I agree with this. If we proceed with the merger, we should definitely bring some of the pictures from that article onto this one. If we do, do you think we should create a new gallery section or should we fit as many as we can to the side? -- Abbasi786786 (talk) 19:39, 20 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Abbasi786786: All photographs should be put in the chart, in the past an administrator removed the photographs for not being in the chart.Catfurball (talk) 19:47, 20 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Catfurball: You mean inside the cells? Or do you just mean in the same general section of the chart and not in the gallery? If you mean either of those, I think it's either aan outdated rule (are there even rules for these articles?) or just an administrator being really heavy-handed. The articles, List of communes in France with over 20,000 inhabitants (the article of this type for the country of France), List of cities in Germany by population (the article for Germany), and List of United States cities by population (the article for the U.S.) all have pictures located outside the cells, and the latter two articles actually have their own gallery sections. Those three articles all get at least as much traffic as this page (if not far more), so if it really was a rule, I think it's probably out of use as those articles would've had their galleries removed quite a while ago. -- Abbasi786786 (talk) 20:01, 20 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Abbasi786786: The photographs should be in the chart they would be safer. I suggest that you look at List of cities in Ukraine. This list I replaced almost all of the photographs with buildings, statues, and monuments that will stand out to tourists. Catfurball (talk) 16:28, 22 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Catfurball: I'm sorry, but I don't understand what you mean by safer. Personally, I think it makes the table look clunky, but if you ever have the spare time, you can do it here and I won't stop you. I will warn you, though, that many cities on the list will not have an image of a tourist attraction, and at least a third won't have an image at all on Wikimedia. -- Abbasi786786 (talk) 17:05, 22 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
