Main Buildings

In the article it says that "The main building was constructed in the 1860s in the heart of the city". Can anybody knowledgeable with the historical development of Zurich confirm this? I thought that at the time there were few buildings in the region near the main building, and only afterwards in the later 19th century many others were built around it, but I don't know for sure. Endowment

True, but since endowment as such is almost non-existent in continental europe, unlike private US institutions which have no budget in the sense of money from the state, it should be used as a equivalent term (unless the term "budget" is supported in that box).172.177.210.99

"budget" does not seem to be supported (US-centrism ;)) - but that is no reason for using the endowment. ESF

Article says: "Sometimes, the annually Erstsemestrigenfest takes place at extraordinary locations, for example the Zurich Airport." Sorry, maybe I wasn't quite clear. I also think that the location was quite cool, but the "sometimes... takes place at extraordinary locations" does imply that usually it is in one particular place but sometimes exceptionally at others. However the ESF is almost certainly not going to be in the polyterasse again, because of the famous fire safety rules. I suggest something like "Due to fire safety regulations and the high number of participants, the annual Erstsemestrigenfest no longer takes place in the ETH itself and has been held in a number of unusual locations over the past few years - for example, the Zürich airport. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 129.132.208.60 (talk) 16:26, 6 February 2007 (UTC).

Time to Graduation

"The regular time to reach graduation is six semesters for the Bachelor of Science degree and three further semesters for the Master of Science degree. The last semester is dedicated to writing a thesis."

These are recommended times. Bachelor/Master is quite new; first year should just have graduated. Any statistics on number of people who have to do a semester or two more? This will probably not be uncommon in, say, D-INFK. Name

article says acronym "ETH" is not expanded in English and thus offical name is "ETH Zürich" But citation provided is link to definition of uniform address format (to make the postman's life easier), which is not the same thing as the offical name. The above paragraph is incorrect. The requirement to only use "ETH Zurich" as the name has nothing to do with the postman; the page that may have been referenced in the past just happens to be the one that is easiest to find and available in English.

The authoritative answer can be found in the corporate design manual, which is only available in German and requires an ETH account.

Page 16 of the corporate design manual dated August 2011 states (in German): "Die ETH Zürich tritt nur noch unter der Bezeichnung «ETH Zürich» bzw. «ETH Zurich» (engl.) gemäss dem Beschluss der Schulleitung vom 29. November 2005 auf.[…] Eine weitere wichtige und beabsichtigte Konsequenz ist das Eliminieren der englischen Bezeichnung «Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich». […] Abkürzungen wie ETHZ sind nicht erlaubt."

In an internal email that was received by all ETH Zurich employees on March 22, 2006, the decision was justified as follows: "In November 2005, the Executive Board of ETH Zurich decided that in future ETH Zurich would have a single address in relation to the public. This decision was taken mainly to improve the visibility and recognition of ETH Zurich as an institution. ETH Zürich is now the only official address, along with its English version: ETH Zurich."

As it stands there are 3 photos of the main building. They are very nice photos, but I think that usefully one of them, could be replaced with a photo of the Hoenggerberg "science city". I'm not happy about this section that has just been copied into this article. When this center doesn't deserve its own article, then better delete it and don't impair this article. The only objection I have is that neither of their websites uses the word "in"; the ETHZ website says Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich i.e. not even a comma; and Lausanne's says École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne i.e. "of Lausanne". Main polytechnics?

The section Main polytechnics in Europe occurs a bit alien to the article, at least to me when I read it. IMO, if such a list is used, it should constitue a seperate article, and a link to it could be placed under the See also section in the ETH Zurich article. Furthermore, it is not clear on which criteria the list is formed. And strangely, as it stands, ETH Zurich is not included in the list. Georg Stillfried (talk) 09:26, 28 March 2014 (UTC)

Hello Manuelaklein. Yes, it is true that Einstein studied at ETH. However, he did not graduate from ETH but from the University of Zurich in 1904, simply because the ETH could not (i.e., was not permitted) to deliver PhD's at that time. In Zurich only the University of Zurich could. The first PhD's by ETH were delivered in 1909, under the impulsion of its then president Jérôme Franel. Sapphorain (talk) 13:59, 4 April 2014 (UTC)

• Oppose. With the exception of the logo, the University's English language welcome page uses "ETH Zurich" with no umlaut [5], as does their English language news service [6]. "ETH Zurich" without the umlaut is how the University is known and represents itself in English. If the umlaut was routinely used in English writing, then we ought to include it, but I simply do not believe that this is the case. Other English language authors also drop the umlaut, e.g. [7][8][9][10] Personally, I believe there is actually a decent argument for moving "Zürich" to "Zurich", as the English language pages for the City and Canton of Zurich also routinely drop the umlaut, e.g. [11], but that would be a different discussion.
