Inventor[edit]

While English Wikipedia claims Clarendon was invented in London, the German Wikipedia claims it was invented in Germany by Benjamin Fox. Does that mean one of them is wrong? Does anyone have any reliable sources on this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.55.20.69 (talk) 20:34, 17 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Clarendon Type used for Vectors (Mathematics and Physics)[edit]

"Vector Analysis is a textbook by Edwin Bidwell Wilson, first published in 1901 and based on the lectures that Josiah Willard Gibbs had delivered on the subject at Yale University. The book did much to standardize the notation and vocabulary of three-dimensional linear algebra and vector calculus, as used by physicists and mathematicians. It went through seven editions (1913, 1916, 1922, 1925, 1929, 1931, and 1943). The work was reprinted by Dover Publications in 1960 and is now in the public domain (See External links)." "When, however, the letters are regarded merely as symbols with with no particular physical significance some typographic difference must be relied upon to distinguish vectors from scalars. Hence in this book Clarendon type is used for setting up vectors and ordinary type for scalars. This permits the use of the same letter differently printed to represent the vector and its scalar magnitude. Thus if C be the electric current in magnitude and direction, C may be used to represent the magnitude of the current." page 4 of Vector Analysis.
