Ban during 1950s[edit]

The Holy See's official journal Acta Apostolicae Sedis Volume 51, p. 271, shows that the Chaplet was banned by the Vatican. Does anyone have more information on this ban and when it was lifted? Suggestion[edit]

I think that Divine Mercy shouldn't redirect to this page. Rather, the Divine Mercy devotion should have its own full article with a link to this article. The Divine Mercy devotion is such an important topic that it deserves its own page.J.J. Bustamante 18:40, 1 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, but Pumpmeup does have a point that some of the text is a little bit over the top for a non-religious encyclopedia. And there is need for many more references. This is a very popular devotion and the page really needs to get cleaned up, e.g. the Anglican ref is just hanging there without proper formatting etc. Whenever one of these issues gets raised, the page will go on my to do list which is 1,000 items long now, but I will try to put this at the top and clean up and add references etc. And if you want to add refs etc. it will be appreciated. The Chaplet[edit]

The actual Chaplet has been removed as a copyright infringement of the published English version. The translation was published in the US in 1987 as a corporate effort - original Polish version and 3 translators with full copyright notice, thus it gains full protection for 95 years. On the other hand the author was Polish, and copyright law there would protect the Polish version until 2008, so that is possibly PD. First off, I am not sure whether having the actual wording of the full prayer fits within WP guidelines. I can't find the policy right now but isn't there a policy against "HOW TO" type things in articles. Summaries and things like that are fine. Second, my bet is the copyright of this flows under the new policies of places like the Vatican copyrighting everything, not to hide things or anything like that, but to prevent against their misuse. Of course I am no copyright expert, but I think just having a summary of what a person is supposed to do for this article should be fine.Marauder40 (talk) 12:50, 25 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I think text of prayers not falling under "how to" was discussed a few places and given that the Our Father prayer could not be excluded, that issue is ok. But the Vatican angle may be an issue as you said, and just like the Raccolta issue that they did not permit unauthorized translations, that means that the copyright bypass approach via our own translation is also dead. I reversed the deletion of the Chaplet. The U.S. publication of the Chaplet doesn't include the actual Chaplet of Divine Mercy, merely the translation. This is an alternate translation of that work. The Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy have copyrighted audio excerpts of their own recitations, not the contents of the Chaplet.
Maria Faustyna Kowalska, the author of the Chaplet, died in 1935. U.S. and British copyright laws (and International agreements) stipulate no more than 70 years after the death of the author. Assuming we don't claim God as the author of the chaplet, or he doesn't file a copyright lawsuit, the Chaplet can be published. Furthermore, the Holy See copyrights items created by or for the institution, typically Papal speeches and Vatican images. There is not outstanding copyright claim by the Holy See on this Chaplet because it played no role in its authorship. 23:44, 10 August 2012 (UTC)

Semi-protected edit request on 24 March 2022[edit]

Under the section titled "Novena":

Change "Non-believers and ignorant who will become Christians" to "Those who do not believe in God and those who do not yet know Him"

Change "Christian heretics and schismatics." to "The souls of those who have separated themselves from His Church"

Following the Second Vatican Council, the Catholic Church has changed the way it speaks about non-Catholics. These changes reflect current Catholic teaching.
