The inscription reads ᚱᚨᚢᚾᛁᛃᚨᛉ (raunijaz)

Untitled[edit]

has anyone actually looked at the photo of the artefact?

It seems to read either "r-a-u-n-i-j-r" or "r-a-u-n-i-ng-r", with the last rune clearly being raido, not algiz, indicating that this inscription post dates the merger of proto-germanic -z and -r. Ansuz does not occur after the ingwaz/jera rune either. The transcription is simply incorrect.

The last rune is clearly ansuz, not raido. There is no trace of a line visible that would link the top line back to the staff (the vertical bar). Also, the two parts of the sixth character are not linked, hence the characteristic diamond shape of ingwaz is absent here. We're just looking at a flipped jeran. The inscription clearly reads r-a-u-n-i-j-a. As for the algiz, German Wikipedia explains: "The 8th rune, the final ᛉ, is no longer clearly legible due to rust." --Florian Blaschke (talk) 04:58, 4 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
