Robert Nemeček (Serbian: Роберт Немечек, romanized: Robert Nemeček, 26 May 1949 – 9 January 2024) was a Serbian and Yugoslav musician, editor, and organizer of events related to music.
Nemeček was an experienced media professional and freelance media consultant with over 13 years of experience in the field. He has held various key roles in the television industry, demonstrating his expertise and leadership. Nemeček was the editor-in-chief at TV Avala from February to December 2010, and from April 2004 to April 2007 he played the key role of assistant general director of RTS. His influence extends to TV B92, TV Avala and RTS, Pink, where he showed leadership as editor-in-chief and assistant general director.
Biography[edit]
Nemeček was born on 26 May 1949, in Belgrade,[1] In the street of Mother Jevrosime no. 42. His parents were his father, Jan, a musician and concert master, and his mother, Divna, née Stefanović, an accountant. His musical heritage began with his great-grandfather, a gifted violinist who travelled from the Czech Republic at the end of the 19th century to join the royal orchestra in the Kingdom of Serbia. This tradition related to music continued through the following generations, with grandfather Josip Nemeček, who played a key role in founding the Belgrade Philharmonic, and father Jan. The family's musical influence extended to Ludwig, Nemeček's uncle, who played jazz trumpet, and Ludmila, his aunt, a dedicated member of the Belgrade madrigalists. Nemeček's grandfather, co-founder of the Academy of Music and the Belgrade Philharmonic, left an indelible mark on the cultural landscape of Serbia, working both as a lecturer and as a performer at the Belgrade Opera.[2]
After being expelled from several high schools, he finally graduated from the Stanković Musical School, where, as he says, he was helped by his association with prominent musicians from his family. In 1976, he was drafted after graduating from high school. Subsequently, he relocated to London, where he remained until 1979. During this period, he acquired valuable knowledge about media relations and their impact. He moved to London again from 1983 to 1988, where, among other things, he was a correspondent for various papers under the umbrella of Politika.[2][1]
Nemeček's other obsession, besides music, was film, and one of the decisive factors was the fact that the Yugoslav Film Archive was around the corner from his place of residence and that he went there to watch movies at the age of five. Robert Nemeček introduced the Serbian public to The Simpsons, Nikita, The Sopranos, The X-Files, Friends and others, while he was an editor at TV Politika, Pink, B92 and RTS.[1]
In his musical career, he first played with the group Dogovor iz 1804, then in Džentlmeni, and then Pop Mašina, later Rok Mašina, with which he achieved media popularity.[3][1]
Nemeček died in Belgrade on 9 January 2024, at the age of 74.[4]
