Summary

Description

Family: Rhamnaceae Distribution: Common in scrubs and also cultivated for fruits. Native of Indian subcontinent and now widely cultivated in tropics. Photographed at Eastren ghats of A.P India. 3-5mts tall armed shrubs. Leaves3-5x1-3cm broadly elliptic-ovate, faintly denticulate, rouded or retuse, base oblique, tomentose beneath.Flowers 3-4mm across, creamy yellow in small axillary fascicles.Calyx lobes 5, triangular, petals 0, stamens 5, anther lobes white, disc 5 lobed, ovary 1 celled.Drupes, orrange red, 1-2cm in diameter globose or ovoid.Seed stony. Ripe fruits are eaten, dried leaves used for hair wash, stem bark for tanning.
