Title
Photograph of Loading Docks at Two Harbors, Minnesota
Description
  • Scope and content: Original caption: Loading docks at Two Harbors, Minn where iron ore is loaded onto Lake Superior boats. Boats coming in for a load of iron bring coal. Note the clam-shell bucket in the air dropping into a boat. The cars on the trestle are run by electricity without drivers.
  • General notes: The original caption is incorrect. This is the Duluth and Iron Range Railroad coal facility at Agate Bay in Two Harbors Minnesota. The boat is having coal unloaded. The tram cars are on a continuous cable drive system that loops them around to the bridge crane that covers the storage field. The storage field could hold 150,000 tons of mine run coal. The concrete towers are a crushing and holding facility. The large locomotives had worm gear coal feeders and could not handle mine run coal. Each tower could hold 10,000 tons of crushed coal. I am sure the Forest Service has interest in this photograph because of the volume of pulpwood logs on flat cars next to the coal towers.(Mel Sando Lake County Historical Society)
