Description
English: Letter from the viceroy of Portuguese India (ポルトガル国印度副王信書, Porutogaru-koku Indo-fukuō shinsho), Duarte de Menezes, to daimyo Toyotomi Hideyoshi concerning the suppression of Christians in Japan. This work is a historic landmark in Portuguese-Japanese relations. This letter from Menezes is the first diplomatic document exchanged between East and West.
Dated to the Azuchi-Momoyama period, April 1588. Located at Myōhō-in (妙法院), Kyoto, Japan.
The letter has been designated as National Treasure of Japan in the category "ancient documents".
日本語: インド副王ドゥアルテ・デ・メネゼスが豊臣秀吉に送った親書。 ポルトガル国印度副王信書 - （国宝, 1588年4月）。1588年四月、ポルトガルのインド副王ドン・ドワルテが豊臣秀吉に送った国書である。羊皮紙を用い、全文約二＋行ポルトガル語で書き、周囲には、楯、槍などを美しく華やかに着色しデザインした文様、各々の下には山が描かれており、これは支配下の各州を表徴したもののようである。 　内容によれば、これは日本国へのキリスト教伝道の許可を求めたもので。
Português: Carta do vice-rei D. Duarte de Menezes a Toyotomi Hideyoshi em 1588. Esta obra é um marco histórico nas relações luso-nipónicas, sendo o seu original considerado, pelo Japão, como tesouro nacional. Esta carta do Vice-Rei D. Duarte de Menezes é o primeiro documento diplomático de que há registo trocado entre o oriente e o ocidente.
