English: Symbol 6077-1 from IEC 60417 - Title/Meaning: Zero-width non-joiner

Additional information:

  • This symbol corresponds to the hexadecimal code point U+200C named ZERO WIDTH NONJOINER of the ISO/IEC 10646-1.
  • This may occur in a formally cursive script (such as Arabic) in a context where it breaks a cursive connection as required for orthographic rules, as in the Persian language, for example. It also may occur in Indic scripts in a consonant-conjunct context (immediately following a virama), to control required display of such conjuncts. (Quoted from IETF/RFC 5892, Appendix A.1.) It also may occur in German compound words at the border of the constituents, to prevent ligatures there according to German typesetting rules.
