Summary

Description
English: An artist's impression of a seated Hipparchus, inspired by the depiction on 2nd–3rd century coins from Roman Bithynia such as the one shown at the subject's feet. Some form of armillary sphere is shown next to him, and the constellations of the zodiac are shown overhead.
In Yaggy & Haines (1880), the plate is captioned "Ancient Metal Engraving", does not illustrate the nearby text, and had the signatures trimmed from the bottom.
In Figuier (1866), the plate is captioned: "STATUE D'HIPPARQUE d'après la médaille frappée à Nicée, au nom d'Hipparque le Nicéen, desinée dans l'Iconographie grecque de Visconti, pl. 57", and is signed Ch. Kreutzberger and Louis Sargent.
Plate 57 of Visconti's book includes a drawing of an ancient Roman coin with Hipparchus on the reverse, at top right.
