November 1[edit]

Template:Section-sign[edit]

The following discussion is an archived debate of the proposed deletion of the template below. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page (such as the template's talk page or in a deletion review).

The result of the discussion was keep. There is no prejudice against (and some push for) making this template subst-only, but if that is reverted please discuss further on the template's talk page before returning here. Primefac (talk) 01:18, 9 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The actual character § should be used instead of this template. This character is easily available on the "Insert" pull-down menu at the bottom of the desktop version of the edit box on every article. This template displays an image, which causes problems when trying to copy-and-paste or search, and also causes the character to be misaligned and not necessarily match the surrounding font. FTR, the § character is used 187377 times in article space (as of the 2020-10-20 database dump) and this template is currently transcluded 163 times. For making tooltips for text instead of images, we have {{hover title}} and {{abbr}}. -- Beland (talk) 18:03, 1 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Delete. I've upgraded the template to use the sombol, not an image, but either way we should not be using a template for this. [Note, though, that {{abbr}} is for marking up abbreviations, not "making tooltips".] Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 12:05, 2 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Keep Question, is it easily accessible in the mobile editor? I just tried, and I couldn't see it anywhere. Can't there just be a recommendation to subst the template? The-Pope (talk) 14:01, 2 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It depends on the keyboard that the user has installed, but it's not in the Wikipedia mobile UI universally or by default. That is something we could change, though, and affects special characters generally. -- Beland (talk) 23:50, 5 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Keep – after Andy's conversion, it seems like a useful typing-aid template – we can't assume that all editors will prefer to scroll through the character menus. The template can be made subst-only though. – Uanfala (talk) 01:17, 5 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I'd be happy with a subst-only template; that solves all of the problems the image caused, while continuing to be accessible to mobile editors. -- Beland (talk) 23:50, 5 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
