Нуклид традиционно определяется как экспериментально изученный связанный набор протонов и нейтронов, который либо стабилен, либо имеет наблюдаемый режим распада.
Существует 252 известных так называемых стабильных нуклида. Многие из них теоретически могут распадаться в результате спонтанного деления, альфа-распада, двойного бета-распада и т. Д. С очень длинным периодом полураспада, но радиоактивного распада пока не наблюдалось. Таким образом, количество стабильных нуклидов может измениться, если в будущем некоторые из этих 252 будут определены как очень долгоживущие радиоактивные нуклиды. Следующая группа - исконные радиоактивные нуклиды. Было установлено, что они радиоактивны, или были идентифицированы продукты распада (теллур-128, барий-130). Их (в настоящее время) 34 (см. _108_years) ">этих нуклидов), из которых 24 имеют период полураспада более 100 триллионов лет. В большинстве из этих 24 распад трудно наблюдать и в большинстве случаев они могут считаться эффективно стабильными. Висмут-209 примечателен как единственный встречающийся в природе изотоп элемента, долгое время считавшийся стабильным. Еще 10 нуклидов, платина-190, самарий-147, лантан-138, рубидий-87, рений-187, лютеций-176, торий-232, уран-238, калий-40 и уран-235 имеют период полураспада от 700 миллионов до 1 триллиона лет, что означает, что они испытали значительное истощение с момента образования Солнечной системы около 4,6 миллиарда лет назад, но все еще существуют на Земле в значительных количествах. Более 60 нуклидов, период полураспада которых слишком короткий, чтобы быть первичными, могут быть обнаружены в природе как в результате более позднего производства в результате естественных процессов, в основном в следовых количествах. Другие более короткоживущие нуклиды были обнаружены в спектрах звезд (например, технеций, прометий и некоторые актиниды).
